Job satisfaction almost 100% in Cornish healthcare workers

A new survey of more than 200 Cornish health workers has revealed startling levels of job satisfaction, with more 98% of staff claiming they enjoy their work.

The figure has risen since the survey was last carried out in 2009 and puts job satisfaction among Cornish workers ahead of their counterparts in the rest of the country.

The survey was carried out on all employees, including nurses, administrative and catering staff working at the Duchy Hospital in Truro and Bodmin NHS Treatment Centre.

More than 75 per cent of staff responded to the survey.

Chris Sealey, the General Manager of the Duchy Hospital commented: “We’re obviously really pleased with these results. They show how rewarding a career in healthcare can be. I expect many industries, and many workers, would look on the commitment and positivity of our staff with envy.”

The survey was comprised of 33 questions across key areas and 50% of respondents agreed with the statement “I enjoy my work”. A further 48% agreed strongly with the statement.

In other areas, 95% felt their working hours were flexible enough, 85% felt that there were sufficient training and development opportunities and around 80% felt that communication between departments was good.

The survey, known as the “Pulse”, was commissioned by Ramsay Health Care, which operates 37 hospitals, treatment centres and neurological units across the UK, including those in Cornwall.

Chris continued: “The Pulse is a vital tool in ensuring we are doing our best for our staff, so they can do their best for our patients. Despite these outstanding results, we are not complacent, and will be working on areas where we can do better, for example, providing more feedback on how we’ve acted on staff suggestions.”

Together, the Duchy Hospital and the Bodmin Treatment Centre carry out procedures on more than 9000 in- and out-patients every year.

The majority of these are from within Cornwall, although a significant number of patients travel from elsewhere in the country to take advantage of specialisms such as orthopaedics, cosmetic surgery and opthalmology.
